Video games made me burn my house down Essay Example for Free
Video games made me burn my house down Essay Itââ¬â¢s finally the Thursday night. Youââ¬â¢ve seen the advertisements on television and have been waiting for this night for months. You have heard all of your friends talking about it. Tonight, your favorite video game is being released at midnight. Youââ¬â¢re getting fidgety just thinking about it. You started counting down the clock as it ticks its way to midnight. Though the clock just past eight, you canââ¬â¢t stand the anticipation. You get in your car, start the engine, and head to the nearest GameStop. Knowing that you are staying up all night for this great, once in a lifetime event, you make a pit stop at Starbucks to get the highest caffeine on the menu. When you arrive at the store, you see a line of people already snaking outside of the store. The sight of the endless line is daunting, but that cup of coffee you got earlier keeps your spirit high. After you fing a parking space, you move toward the end of the line. While waiting, you make new friends, talking excitedly about the game; things like: rewards, tricks, strategy, and glitches. While talking and having fun, time flies, and itââ¬â¢s almost midnight. This is it. The moment youââ¬â¢ve been waiting for, finally within your grasp. Everyone is restless at the door; but something is not right. The door is not opening. With racing thoughts, you notice the crease of those around you. What is happening? Why isnââ¬â¢t the door opening? Youââ¬â¢ve been waiting so long for the door to happiness to be opened. After an hour of nothing happening, you get in your car and head home. The next morning, you wake up to the sound of the television. Disappointed that it isnââ¬â¢t the game that youââ¬â¢re supposed to be playing, you move to turn the TV off. Just as youââ¬â¢re about to press the button, the news comes on. The news reporter reports a new law has been passed that video games rated M have been banned for sales. Apparently, statistics have shown that M rated video games leads to violence in teenagers. While we know this is fictional, video games havenââ¬â¢t been banned in real lifeâ⬠¦ yet. In todayââ¬â¢s society, video games are overwhelming popular, especially in teenagers. With signs of violence frequent in society, video games are an easy victim to blame for. If we donââ¬â¢t acknowledge fictional facts about video games, they might really be gone forever. Video games donââ¬â¢t cause violence in children, and in fact improve cognitive and social skills. First of all, video games donââ¬â¢t cause violence. It always has been a myth. The idea that video games cause violence has not been supported by any research. ProCon. org quoted Lawrence Kutner, PhD, and Cheryl K. Olson, ScD, co-founders of the Harvard Medical School Center for Mental Health and Media, in their book there has always been a ââ¬Å"big fearâ⬠that video games are a causation for violence in todayââ¬â¢s society. They continue to point out that with millions of children and adults playing these games, the world has not been reduced to chaos and anarchy (n.pag. ). With more and more video games being produced, the number of gamers increases. Still we see no correlation in both subjects. ProCon. org quotes another researcher Henry Jenkins, Ph. D. at University of Southern California, ââ¬Å"According to federal crime statistics, the rate of juvenile violent crime in the United States is at a 30-year low. â⬠He continues to say that even though America has 90 percent of its boys and 40 percent of its girls playing these video games, the majority of kids who play do not commit anti-social acts. Jenkin also quotes a 2001 U. S. Surgeon Generalââ¬â¢s report, ââ¬Å"The strongest risk factors for school shooting centered on mental stability and the quality of home life, not media exposureâ⬠(n. pag. ). Even though violence is around every day in our lives, video games should not be the blame of the problem. If anything, video games are helping children. The first benefit of playing video games is that it teaches children work with one another better. There is no ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ in team, which video games will teach to the children. ABC news reported series of experiments published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, ââ¬Å"Researchers found that participants who had just played a ââ¬Ëpro-socialââ¬â¢ game which require characters to work together are more likely to engage in helpful behavior in real life than those who play ââ¬Ëneutralââ¬â¢ games like Tetris. â⬠ââ¬Å"Upsides of social games can even extend to the physical world,â⬠also reported by ABC news, ââ¬Å"Players of the popular social game on Facebook met a challenge from its creators and planted 25,000 trees in the game world in 25 days, leading the gameââ¬â¢s developer to plant 25,000 trees in real lifeâ⬠(n.pag. ). With games today that all promotes the co-op play, children learn the idea of teamwork is needed to achieve a common objective. Thus, this activity leads to co-op play in the physical world. The second benefit of playing video games is that they teach children cognitively. Hope Gillette quotes Dr. Pamela Rutledge, Director of the Media Psychology Research Center, in her article, ââ¬Å"Video games and your children: Pros and cons,â⬠that video games create a multi-sensory experience for players. She also said that players could often feel as if they were transported to another world, just like when we say, ââ¬Å"I was lost in a good book. â⬠Playersââ¬â¢ brains create a simulation of life for the experience, and by making progress through the game; they learn how to get around easier over time (n. pag. ). ABC news also reported a recent study from the Education Development Center and the U. S. Congress-supported Ready To Learn (RTL) Initiative found that a curriculum that involved digital media such as video games could improve early literacy skills when coupled with strong parental and teacher involvement. Interestingly, the study focused on young children, and 4- and 5-year-olds that participated showed increases in letter recognition, sound association with letters, and understanding basic concepts about stories and print. ABC recognizes college students as well saying, ââ¬Å"Students who undergo a 3D virtual simulation at Loyalist College in Ontario reported that the number of successful test scores increased from 56 percent to 95 percent (n. pag. ). The educational benefits of video games are way overlooked by society, but once in plain sight, itââ¬â¢s easy to see. Video games are not as dangerous as society portrays them to be. Not only do video games promote educational growth, they also help an individual to work with others. Correlation shows that as video games become increasingly popular and violence never seems to cease, but correlation does not imply causation. So implying video games cause violence in society is like saying that Pac-Man affected us as kids, and weââ¬â¢re all doomed to be running around in dark rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.

How To Find A Writing Topic Problem-solution Essays :: essays research papers
How to Find A Writing Topic Problem-Solution Essays Have you ever received a problem-solution essay where you cannot think of anything to write? Although many of the forty million students in America go through this at one time or another, don't despair! There are several systematic ways to find a writing topic. Some topics take no research at all. Let's look at a few of them. First, the local newspaper may contain some interesting articles. The newspaper can be used as a utility to the writing process. Problems will present themselves in many newspaper articles. Articles will most likely contain many facts and quotations about a certain problem making the subject easily researchable in a short time. People must be careful, though, when using the newspaper. Many other people may use it as a source and you may find yourself writing about the same thing as someone else. Another solution might be to write in regard to your own past experiences that have involved problems and solutions. They may be problems you have had with your parents or siblings. A problem could be that you cannot decide on something and have to make a tough decision. Writing about a decision that you made about clothes will suffice. But in the view of someone else, the problem may seem insignificant. Both previous solutions may in some cases fail. If so, writing about not knowing what to write and how to solve that may lead to the best alternative. It may look as if the assignment was quickly jotted down due to the fact that there is no research to do, but if it is well written it can turn out to be a very good essay. When specific information is needed there are many things that could be doctored to suit the needs of the article.

Business Report of Lenovo Essay
Introduction Lenovo was found in 1984 in Beijing and it is the worldââ¬â¢s second-largest PC vendor. According to the last official statistic, Lenovo consolidated turnover of 146.6 billion Yuan and Lenovo employs nearly 40,000 people. Lenovo is a well-known national brand in China and Lenovo is serving customers in more than 160 countries. In order to expand overseas business and access to world-class brand, Lenovo carried out an acquisition of the former IBM Personal Computing Division in 2005. IBM was founded in 1911 in the United States and it is the largest information technology and business solutions company in the world, currently has more than 30 million employees in the world, with operations in over 160 countries and regions. The problems experienced by Lenovo concerns the construction of cross-cultural teams. Most of the merger and acquisition fail in the post-merger cultural integration. Lenovo set up work teams for designing the future of IBM and developing the new view after acquisition. The results had been shown it uneasy and can lead to the failure of the Lenovoââ¬â¢s acquisition strategy. At the beginning of the acquisition, cultural differences had not been enough anticipated in the acquisition process. And Lenovo wants to remedy the problem as soon as possible to make IBM acquisition profitable in the next strategy. The report part of the business plan Summary This report is intended to identify, describe and propose some solutions to Lenovo to solve the problems about teams and groups in the acquisition of the IBM. This report will describe problems associated with team building, provides some possible solutions and evaluates each of these. And, this report will describe the impact of cultural differences on the establishment of work groups. Actually, Lenovo had taken some measures, but it with little success. According to the current state of Lenovo, this report will give some suggestions and solutions to overcome or avoid the conflict caused by cultural differences and set up effective cross-cultural teams. Especially, these solutions are based on literature on the issue. It concludes that it is necessary for the company to establish effective and appropriate measures to eliminate the barriers in cross-cultural teams, as absence of this may threaten the companyââ¬â¢s long-term development. To overcome the problem, Lenovo should take the follow action for IBM survival: * Obtain the core values between Chinese employees and American employees through an internal survey. * Design an international training program for all the employees and especially for managers. * Incorporate both corporate cultures of Lenovo and IBM to create a new corporate culture. * Every cross-culture team should organise monthly meeting or weekly meeting to evaluate the progress of communications and work. * Organise some internally non-working activities to create more opportunities for the communication among employees with different cultural context. * Set up the special teams to deal with the problem caused by cultural difference in every cross-cultural team. Introduction This section of business plan will introduce the problems caused by cultural differences in cross-cultural teams and give some suggestions to overcome the problems. In the acquisition of IBM, Lenovo accepted more than 10,000 employees and it also means that Lenovo accepted a very different culture. Lenovo is not only facing the differences between western and eastern culture, but also Lenovo facing the problems of how to integrate the teams with different organisationally cultural context. In this report, the recommendations to overcome the problems in cross-cultural teams and groups are based on the literature on team building and cross-cultural team management. Body At the beginning of the acquisition of IBM, Lenovo had taken some measures. For example, in order to both sides can communicate better, the new Lenovo use the international common language ââ¬â English as the official language of the company. But cultural integration is a long-term process, which requires companies to devote their time and patience and the communication, compromise between both of high level, and staff in the acquisition. It must not be too hasty. Base on the fact of Lenovo, there are three aspects should be noticed and improved. Firstly, IBM has a long history and IBM has very high brand awareness. In addition to the brand, employees can get the respect for personal values ââ¬â¹Ã¢â¬â¹and a comfortable working environment can be provided for employees by the human resources services and the improvement of the system. In contrast, Lenovo has a big gap no matter the position in IT industry and the strength of themselves. If some team members uphold the cultural superiority or group superiority that their own cultural value system better than those members from other cultures or groups, their behavior maybe resulting in the failure of team building because they will be possible to take hate and boycott from other members, even lead to conflict. Because the conflicts caused by cultural differences between team members and individual differences under thus influence, analysis and identification of cultural differences is necessary. Secondly, communication is the process of exchange and transmission of information among people or groups. Because of the multi-cultural background, language and non-language barrier, people lack of understanding of each otherââ¬â¢s political, economic, legal, social and cultural environment, and the understanding of the customs, values, etc. are different. They are often based on their own perspective to make an analysis and judgment on each otherââ¬â¢s information, and thus the misunderstanding and conflict are often obtained. Because of these, design a multi-cultural training and hold a monthly meeting or weekly meeting is necessary. Thirdly, a company has an acquisition of another company means an integration of two different corporate cultures. When the employees of a cross-cultural group are conscious of the different of personal cultural awareness with others, it will be cause the group lost their purpose. Based on the possibility, establish a common business concept and corporate culture is a good solution to this problem. Establish a new joint management concept and a strong culture based on the environmental requirements and the principle of the companyââ¬â¢s strategic development, so that reducing cultural conflict and that each employeeââ¬â¢s thinking and behavior can combine with the companyââ¬â¢s operations and purpose. Adopting these recommendations and the actions in summary can make internal and external combination of the teams more closely, establish a good reputation in the international market and enhance multinational cultural adaptability. This is the ultimate goal of why Lenovo needs solve the cross-cultural issues of teams and group in the acquisition of IBM. (1077 words) Section 2 1. What the literature says ââ¬Å"teams and groupsâ⬠The importance of teams and groups for an organisation In modern society, one personââ¬â¢s power, information and resources are limited. Most time people need cooperate with others no matter working or others as Handy (1993) said ââ¬Å"On average, managers spend 50% of their working day in one sort of group or other. Senior managers can spend 80%â⬠. Although there is no clear and single definition of a ââ¬Å"teams and groupsâ⬠, there is a basic limited definition by Bennett (1991) ââ¬Å"a collection of two or more people who possess a common purposeâ⬠. The formation of an organisation groups in order to achieve the purpose of work more efficiently. An organisation can produce some different kinds of groups, for example: formal and informal, LOCO, HICO, teams, etc. An organisation needs to be aware of their differences and use them as efficiently as possible. There are a lot satisfying reasons why an organisation should create work groups. For example, organising effective groups can have some uses for the distribution of work, the management and control of work, problem-solving and decision-making, information processing, information and idea collection, testing and ratifying decisions, co-ordination and liaison, increased commitment and involvement, negotiation and conflict resolution, inquest or inquiry into the past. (Handy, 1993) No matter what kind of a group there is a bottom line is ââ¬Å"A strong group is â⬠¦ usually more powerful than a strong individual and can have a considerable effect on organizational policy and practice.â⬠(Thomson, 2002) This literature review will pay attention on teams mainly. In a team, everyone plays different role and they have specific function and they working with an important principle ââ¬Å"voluntarily co-ordinate their work in order to achieve group objectivesâ⬠(Bennett, 1991). Building a team People hope they can define their identity through their membership of certain groups like people belong to local political and pressure groups, for example, because they experience a shared set of values with the other people in the group which reinforces their own values. But, according to Thomson (1997), one reason why people belong to group is ââ¬Å"social needsâ⬠. As Thomson & Mabey said ââ¬Å"some â⬠¦ groups will be family or friendship groups, which are formed to meet a diverse range of needs such as affection, security, support, belonging or identity. Some may be committees, where members usually represent different interest groups who come together to discuss their differing perspectives on matters of interestâ⬠, people should build a team for the work that is highly complex problems, need for consensus decisions and there is uncertainty when a broad range of competences are required. A company is a big group of a lot of people working together, so the managers are responsible to build effective teams or workgroups. After collecting more individual talents, building a team has the ability to use the talents on a united effort and success is very important (Woodcock, 1979). Consequently, the managers should know how to effectively build a team. In general, the managers must have the knowledge about the five development stages (forming, storming, norming, performing and mourning) in a team or workgroup and they should have an appropriate leading method for themselves (Thomson & Mabey, 1994). Of course, this is not enough for managing a team. The managers need realise everyoneââ¬â¢s advantages and dis advantages in the team and especially the differences of their culture context. Teams and cross-cultural context In modern society, business environment developed quickly international. Different cultural members mixed in a team so that the team has powerful ability to solve complex problem. But, individuals from different cultural context must show a different behavior and values in the team. This is because the peopleââ¬â¢s cognition, thinking, needs, values, code of conduct, customs, etc. are formed in the years of life, work and education. The individual differences caused by cultural differences led to the conflict of the team in the cross-cultural context (Sun, 2012). So, how to make a cross-cultural team working effective is the main responsibility of managers. In a cross-cultural team, there is an important factor is a clear understanding of every one culture and values, and a process of acculturation. The acculturation process is a mutual exchange of cultural pattern (Olie, 1995). Related to the case of Lenovo, the best recommendation for acculturation is integration. It different with one culture dominate the others, integration is a process of acculturation (Nahavandi & Malekzadeh, 1995). Interest for Lenovo In the case of Lenovo, Chinese and American must accept each other for working effectively. But the main problem in the cross-cultural groups is communication. The managers of Lenovo must make everyone in the group understands and adapt to the different culture with some training or actions. And more important is design a politic cooperatively cultural pattern. 2. What does the literature say about different cultural contexts and its influence on teams and groups What are culture and its importance According to Hofstede(2003), culture is ââ¬Å"the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one group or category of people from anotherâ⬠. It related to a group. With a large-scale research study of IBM branches around the world by Geert Hofstede, the culture is considered a compositive project. Geert Hofstede creates a new way to describe culture through five variables: power distance, individualism, masculinity/femininity, uncertainty avoidance and long-term orientation. All theories have limitations. Although this method created by Geert Hofstede is not absolutely right, it does not affect the theory of Hofstede can analyse one countryââ¬â¢s culture as a valuable tool. Contract with the case of Lenovo, the most important effect by culture is ââ¬Å"Currently only 25% of international mergers and acquisitions in Europe are successful. The price of failure is high. Cultural misunderstanding lead to loss of face, loss of money and, in extreme case, even loss of lifeâ⬠(Gibson cited in Naysmith, 2006). If managers do not pay enough attention on the culture, it possibly can cause the failure of the acquisition of IBM. Organisational culture Culture is not only exists in the countries, but also culture exists in any organisation constituted by people. Based on Handy (1993) said, ââ¬Å"The role organisation will succeed as long as it can operate in a stable environmentâ⬠. A steady cultural environment is necessary for an organization get success. At the same time, organisational culture is manageable and it can affects the approach of management, the accepted goals and customer of the society determine and influence that what managers strive for and the rule observed by managers (Stewart cited in Naysmith, 2006). So, the organisation also based on the cultural context of the country. The organisational culture can also measured by the five variables created by Hofstede.(Geert Hofstede, 2001) Influence of culture on ââ¬Å"teams and groupsâ⬠If a company formed by people comes from different cultural country, this company will own a special energy. It is a competitive advantage from a cross-cultural context. But, exerting the competitive advantage effectively is the most important challenge for the cross-cultural group. Because in a cross-cultural group the members have different working purpose and processes will be revealed. (Maznevski & Peterson, 1997) The effectiveness of work group will be decreased by the ethnocentrism, stereotypes, different expectations and difference in values. And these negative emotions will produce the anxiety and misunderstanding in-group, even diminishing the workers dedication to the company and destroying the group ardor. Interenst for Lenovo Cross-border mergers and acquisitions not only include the corporate cultural differences of both sides, but also include the cultural differences between the countries of the two sides. Organise some activities or cultural training to make more opportunities for every understanding different culture can eliminate the negative affects effectively. 3. Conclusion This literature review introduces some keys briefly for understanding teams and groups in a cross-cultural context. Firstly, teams and groups are particular important for an organisation. But there are some problems should be solved in a cross-cultural group. The managers is not only should know everyoneââ¬â¢s skill and talent, but also they should know their difference caused by different cultural context. And some actions can make a good communication between each other for understanding the differences are necessary. Secondly, based on enough knowledge to understand the importance of culture, the managers should eliminate the negative affects of cross-cultural context through some activities or training. And the most important is creating an appropriate organisational culture. It can give the cross-cultural group an approach, so the cross-cultural group can exerts the competitive advantages completely. Personal Statement My Group Experience - 1119 Words
Jessica Cortez Valentin Comm 8-8:00a.m Nov. 8, 2015 My Group Experience I never enjoyed doing any school work in a group. Somehow I always ended up doing all the work while everyone else in my group got to ââ¬Å"chillâ⬠and not worry about anything. I always saw it as either I do it and get a good grade or I do not do it and we all fail. I knew I always had the chance to let my teachers know I did all the work and let my group get no credit for it, but I was always too nice to do that. I came into this class as a freshman not knowing what to expect. All I knew was that I was not good at doing speeches alone, so this class was probably my best bet. My first group experience in this class completely changed the way I feel about doing work as a group. We were all able to communicate with each other very well and allowed one another to voice their opinions about how they felt we were doing things. We also all got along with each other which made it fairly easy to figure out our group roles and responsibilities. While de ciding on the topic of our first presentation, the informative speech, we each looked up different ideas and told each other what we were all interested in. Once we got an idea of what each person found interesting we were now able to pick a topic we would all enjoy researching and learning about. Now all we had to do was decide who was responsible for all the different roles we had to fulfill in order to get the presentation done. The Punishment Of The Prison System - 1842 Words
Prisons are closed institutions. They are established and funded by governments to hold people against their will, but why punish (Zyl Smit, 2010)? What is the purpose of prison? This fundamental question stirs up a significant amount of debate. The government, citizens, educators, and even prisoners are divided about the right answers. There is disagreement in the US about the purpose of the prison system. On the one hand, the regulations of the prison system may seek deterrence, incapacitation, or retribution to avoid appearing too soft on criminals (Zyl Smit, 2010; Rossum, 2003). On the other hand, the regulations of the prison system may seek to opportunities to resocialize prisoners or to effect changes in the character, attitudes, or behavior of the convicted offender (Zyl Smit, 2010; Harvard Law Review, 2010). Which approach is the most effective for a society that decides to punish? What do we do about those who commit crimes? This questions seems to have a more definitive answer in the US. The Art Of Storytelling How An Individual Can Recover...
The Art of Storytelling Storytelling is an art that can take many forms. Stories engage people on all different levels and the greatest pathway to tell a good story is the use of emotion. It can also serve as a medium to communicate unsaid emotions. Stories educate and also preserve history by passing it carefully on to the next generation. Each person has a different story. One story is a just as fascinating and unique as the other and at some point in life one gets to realize that no two stories are exactly alike. Telling stories also present a way of understanding oneââ¬â¢s life with a deeper understanding and meaning. Stories matter and sometimes all a person wants is a listener or just a way to know they are being heard. Financial Environment Business Development ââ¬Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss About The Financial Environment Business Development? Answer: Introduction Both IAS 36 and As 28 deals with the accounting for impairment of assets. As per this, all the tangible and intangible assets needs to be analysed and assessed at regular intervals for permanent write down in the value of the assets in case the indicators of impairment so exists. These factors can be categorised as internal or external factors. The ultimate idea behind the IAS is the assets should not be carried in the books at more than the recoverable value i.e., the higher of the value in use and the fair value of the asset less the cost of disposal.(Fay Negangard, 2017) The impairment loss is calculated by subtracting the recoverable value from the carrying value of the asset. Goodwill and other intangible assets having indefinite life are to be assessed annually through an impairment test. Moreover, in case the single asset is not able to generate revenue for the company on independent basis as compared to the other assets, then a group or class of assets known as the cash gene rating unit which is capable of generating the revenues independently needs to be analysed for impairment as a group. It is not that the impairment loss once provided in the books cannot be reversed but it can be done so post reassessment in the future period if the positive indicators exists. IAS 36 is applies on land and building, plant and machinery, goodwill, intangible assets, investment in subsidiaries or any other company, etc. It is not applicable on some of assets like financial assets, agricultural assets, assets in the nature of employee benefits, inventories, deferred tax assets and non current assets held for sale purposes. (Buchanan, et al.,) Recognition measurement of impairment loss For giving the effect f impairment in the books, the company needs to the periodic evaluation whether the assets needs to be impaired or not based on the indicators. In case the indicators do exist, the identification of the same alongwith the recoverable value needs to be done. There can be 2 types of indicators namely external and internal. External indicators generally include factors like assets carried in the books is higher than the market capitalization, or the market value of the assets has declined considerably or there is a negative change in the fashion, trend, preferences or technology in the market area or that the market rates of interest have increased. (Das, 2017) These are generally outside the scope of the company and affects the entire industry. Internal indicators include physical damage being done to the asset, excessive obsolescence to the asset condition or asset is lying idle and is being kept for sale or the asset is expected too give least economic performan ce or the investment is joint venture or subsidiary is more than the investees assets recorded in the books. The list of the above examples is not exhaustive and there can be many others. Besides impairment, the company also needs to reassess the depreciation policy, the method, the estimated useful life, etc so that the asset are appearing correctly. The recoverable value of the asset is the higher of the fair value less cost of disposal or the value in use of the asset, whichever is higher. The difference between the carrying value of the assets in the books and the recoverable value calculated above is recognised as impairment loss. Secondly, the recoverable value may be calculated for a single asset or a group of assets called the CGU. (Goldmann, 2016) The value in use if the present value of the future cash flows expected to be earned from the asset at a rate of interest. This generally has 2 components: Cash flows: The cash flows needs to be estimated keeping in mind aspects like uncertainity of the cash flows, illiquidity of the market, the time value of money while receiving those cash flows. Moroever, it should not include any major capital expenditure which the company is expecting to incur in the coming period.(Michaely Jacob, 2017) The other considerations include it should be realistic and based on the supportings and evidences based on the latest financial statements and in case the time period is large, the same should be extrapolated as per IAS. Rate of discount: the rate utilized here for the calculation should be pre tax rate as per the current market conditions and should include the uncertaininity or risk factor. (Mahapatra, et al., 2017) It should be the rate which the investor would have expected on investing in a particular project or the rate at which the funds would have been borrowed from the market to invest in the asset. In addition to the above considerations, the firm should also adjust its projections based on the deficiencies and differences as fiund in the previous years estimate for over or understatement of the projections. (J, 2016) The next factor is the calculation of the fair value less cost of disposal, which is the price at which the entity would have sold the asset at the arms length price to the willing and knowledgeable party. For finding this, the amount in the binding sale agreement or if the asset would have been sold in the active market can be used. If no other information is available then DCF technique can be used for the estimation. The cost of disposal should include all the direct costs related to the sale of the asset. (Meroo-Cerdn, et al., 2017) Based on the above inputs impairment loss is calculated and shown in the profit and loss account. Moreover, the future years depreciation also needs to be adjusted on a prospective basis. For goodwill, the amount once impaired cannot be reversed back in any circumstance whatsoever. Like impairment, the amount posted can also be reversed if trhe positive indicators do exist indicating the improved status of the asset. (Mahapatra, et al., 2017 As per the data given, in the books of Gali limited ended on 30th June, 2015, the impairment assessment needs to be done and fine china division has been identified as one of it CGU. (Goldmann, 2016) The carrying amount is as follows: In the case study, since the total fair value of the all the assets asset less cost of disposal is not provided, we are considering value in use ie., 645000 as the recoverable value of the entire CGU. Therefore, amount to be impaired arrives to (720000-645000) = 75000. Now the amount of 75000 needs to be allocated firstly to goodwill to the extent of 25000, and then to the other remaining assets. Therefore remaining impairment loss left to be apportioned is 75000-25000 = 50000. Inventory being a current asset held for sale does not comes in the ambit of impairment under IAS 36. The other workings of apportionment is below: Since the fair value less cost of disposal has been restricted for plant, the maximum amount uptill which the plant can be impaired is 465804 i.e., by 18196 and therefore the remaining 18195 would need to be apportioned across the other assets of the CGU. (Boccia Leonardi, 2016) The revised allocation summary is shown below: Thus, the final allocation of the impairment loss comes out to be Goodwill: 25000, Plant, 18196, Equipment 19504 and Fittings 12300. The journal entry to effect for the above impairment loss is mentioned below: Conclusion Th etpic of impairment depends a lot on the judgement and estimates therefore a proper supporting and working is important considering the various factors and inputs.(kabir, et al., 2017) All the assumptions taken by the management needs to be justified and properly disclosed in the financial statements such as: The basis of impairment taken and the amount of loss recognised and reversed; Impairment loss being recognised or reversed on the revalued assets in OCI; The quantum of reversal, the internal and external indicators leading to impairment; Other critical considerations and circumstances.
